Breast reduction surgeries become more commonplace
In 2023, there was a 64% increase in the amount of American women having elective breast reduction surgery compared to 2019, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Dr. Anthony Deboni, a plastic surgeon with CNY Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery, says the increase is due to multiple reasons. Some are completely cosmetic, wanting the tissue removed not to relieve symptoms but to reshape and reduce the size for aesthetics. Others have pain and symptoms they want alleviated.
“The main issue, though, is [primarily] being done for improvement [of] neck pain, back pain, shoulder pain, bra strap grooving,” Deboni said. ”That’s the most common reason women seek breast reduction. It is definitely on the rise.”
